Happy New Year's Eve (AKA What Happens When Allison Gets Bored)

Well, happy eve of '09, everybody!

I was thinking of putting something mind-blowing up here, or something utterly amazing, but you'll have to settle with an excerpt from a story-in-progress of mine. You guys are always wondering what I'm writing about on that yellow pad of paper, so here it comes.

First off, background information.

This is about one of my favorite characters, inspired by the video game Assassin's Creed. The game itself deals with assassins during the era of the third crusade. Thinking this was the best idea yet, and spurned onwards by the promise of a futuristic element to the game, I sat down at the computer at Grandma's house and wrote.

And wrote.

And wrote.

And wrote.

I had a character spring to life. Armalia, or Army; average teen figuring out her body's been housing the spirit of a medieval assassin for the past years. This concept was further explored to create Starlight, super hero, and Army, orphan who's just trying to make ends meet in addition to saving New York-like Town, USA. I obviously had fun creating this.

And here... we... go.

* * *

. . .

I awoke to the sound of my heavy breathing, lying in a frigid pool of sweat.

It was a dream, I thought. One hand groped about in the darkness for a matchbox, while my other assisted me in rising from the mattress. It was just a dream. A dark, fragmented dream, but a dream nonetheless.

My hand found a square container, and I held it close to my face. I could feel my cold breath on my skin as I opened the box, feeling for the familiar wooden stick I had grown to love. At this point, my nose registered a foul odor, like dried blood. . . . I carefully picked out a match, and struck it against its container.

Bedbugs scattered like ants in the shadow of an anteater. They had been the source of the smell; apparently I hadn't set the traps right, and the insects decided to party. . . The vampire bugs must've been squished by me, I thought, disgusted at the idea. Supporting evidence of dried and drying blood appeared in splatters on the sheet. It sickeningly reminded me of a fact I had read; [somebody] . . . stated he was able to write his name on the prison walls using a medium of smashed bedbugs. Was I in a prison, as badly kept as that? I dwelled, uncharistically philosophic for a moment, on this as I lit a candle.

The burning wick shed light on the rest of my cell walls. A simple five by ten room, barely big enough for a feather bed, tattered covers, and a small crate that functioned as a night stand.

. . .

The walls began to rumble, and I shakily stood up. I wobbled on jelly legs tot he door, stepping carefully over moving black dots. The walls were shivering violently now as a great beast thundered past. I had to shoulder the door open.

The eight o'clock C-Train sucked the air from the tunnel as it roared away, loose papers and my hair flying around it. It passed, and the tunnels returned to their serene quiet.

Eight, I thought. Starlight should be up by now.

Indeed she should be. I observed as Armalia slipped back into the matinence closet, like the shadow she was. I watched from above, standing on the tunnel ceiling. I'd be concealed by the dank, murky darkness, at least until she looked hard enough. Which meant I was safe for a while.

As the shuttle had bulleted past, my head had peeked inside. I noticed a red fogged man holding a briefcase, containing lord knows what. Those around him were of black and white; no one of consequence on board but the red man.

I decided to wati to transmit this information to her. The door opened a crack, and the shadow slid out, cloaked in inky black. Peering closer, I noticed the glint of steel, and grinned. She had misplaced the scabbards, once again. I dropped behind her, and tailed Armalia as she walked through the tunnel.

She smelled like dead rat and bedbugs. Especially bedbugs. I had noticed small bites all over her dark complexion, looking quite similar to pimples. The twelve pointed, face painted star on her face disguised them for the most part, although the spider bite from last night was very apparent on the tip of her steeply slanted nose.

I wondered if the donning of this guise alone turned Armalia to this dark, quiet figure. I reached out mentally for the empathic link between us, seized it, and channeled myself through it once more.

/See anything interesting while snooping about?/

I should try to be a bit more subtle next time. /Fine, thanks, and how are you?/

* * *

And that's it.

Questions? Comments? Complaints? All are welcome.

I know this is horrible compared to other authors, don't pretend this is the best piece of work since Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. I'm tired of that, to be honest. I want actual constructive criticism.

Happy Almost New Year!

It's a Girl!!!

Welcome to the world Baby Girl Garner! Yes she still lacks a name. The journey began yesterday when Summer and Damon were informed by their doctor that they should hear from the Hospital sometime that day and would hopefully have a room to check into by 6pm that evening. Unfortunately the call that they received was to advise them that there wasn't any room at the Inn and to sit tight, they could receive a call later in the evening. And it finally came! They were told to check in at 11pm and the journey to bring Baby Girl Garner into the world would begin.

Damon and Summer checked in and started the process of getting settled and getting poked and prodded, well Summer was poked and prodded, Damon just stood by patiently waiting, providing awesome Daddy support. In the meantime, team Garner (My mom, dad and myself) stood by patiently waiting for the "It's time" phone call. That call finally arrived a little after 3am this morning. I jumped out of bed, threw on some clothes and waited for my parents to pick me up. I wasn't excited to meet my new niece at all.

We arrived at the hospital to find out that we had a bit of a wait still to go, as Summer was only dilated to a 4. So we parked our behinds in what there was of a waiting room, turning off the noisey Christmas tree decoration they had sitting on the table next to us (oops, should have turned that back on when we left) and waited...After the Doctor chewed out the nurses for failing to increase Summer's pitocin on a regular basis, we finally began to hear about some progress. Next thing we knew, Summer was at a 7, at about 7:30ish then all of a sudden she was 8-9 and starting to push and at exactly 8:03am this morning we received a text message from Damon that she was here! Of course that was after we overheard the nurse saying that Room 4 (Damon & Summer's room)had just delivered. We then listened to the other staff question the nurse about room 4 really having delivered because she was just at a 7!

So the as yet named Baby girl Garner was born at about 8:01 or 8:02 am, weighing 7lbs 7ozs, and is 21 inches long. She has what might be described as lightish brown hair, with a hint of red to it, and yes it appears as though it has a bit of a curl to it.

I must apologize for the photo quality. I had a difficult time getting a good photo for a few reasons. First of all Baby Garner seems to like movement and she would scream at us if she stopped moving and my camera didn't like that. And yes that blur in the picture to the right is Damon zooming by. Second of all she insisted on sucking on her hand which of course was stuck in her blanket after having been wrapped up like a baby burrito.

Daddy was all grins and drill holes (if you know Damon, you know the story behind drill holes). Summer looked happy but absolutely exhausted, can't imagine why....Congratulations Damon and Summer, she's beautiful, I can't wait to see you all again!! But she better have a name soon!!

Santa dropped by & left pressies!!

Merry Christmas!! We hope everyone had a great Christmas like we did! As you can see, the girls were most certainly spoiled, as always lol. Allison had requested new D&D books in addition to a drawing tablet for the computer. Lindsay had asked for a video camera and Katie had asked for a tea set and a Nintendo DS. Needless to say no one was disappointed and Lindsay is now driving us batty sticking her video camera in our faces at the most inopportune times, ha ha ha. But who knows, maybe she'll be our first Hollywood Director!

Summer's Baby Shower

As you may know, the Garner family has been preparing for the arrival of it's newest family member. On Tuesday the 23rd I threw a baby shower for Summer and baby girl Garner. I attempted to put together a couple of silly shower games and rewarded the players with candies and nice smelling stuff. I think the most enjoyable part was us gals getting together and swapping baby stories. I hope the gifts that Summer and Damon received will finish up what they may have needed and added to all the fun stuff that they didn't necessarily need, but it's just plain fun having ('cause it sure was fun shopping for those things!). Look at those baby bumps!!

Garner Christmas Party

On Sunday the 21st we went to Grandma Garner's Christmas Party. We enjoyed our time with the Garner family so very much. The highlight of the evening was of course getting to sit on Santa's lap!! Karter was the life of the party, keeping us all entertained with his funny comments and silly faces. The evening was great fun and the time we were able to spend with Grandma is precious to us all.

T-Minus Five Days till Present Time

Or, more accurately, five days until freak out.

Hello, hello, all one of our followers and all two of our readers. I'm coming here just to say some random stuff to fill out my monthly blog quota.

First week of December, I managed to get through It's a Wonderful Life. It was truly a wonderful play, and I had a wonderful time. A couple of things...

Before I begin, the first night was Friday the 5th, second was Saturday the 6th, and last was Monday the 8th.
1) On the first night, the tree wasn't supposed to be knocked over by one of the kids. Poor boy. =/
2) On the first night, yes, we all agree the door not opening was hilarious, and even the actor admits it was.
3) Whenever it happened, Mary was not supposed to go "Ring-ring!" during the scene at home.
4) On the second night, people went nuts over a simple little word: "Macbeth." Somebody uttered it, and the whole cast went wild over knocking on (fake) wood. Saying Macbeth in theater is considered bad luck, and may cause the onstage actors to die. The lead male and the angel were afraid that the bridge would collapse beneath them and both would die. Also, the first person to have said Macbeth was Harry, who, at the end, forgot a key scene prop: the book. So Mister Potter's Goon just walks on stage, hands Harry the book, walks off.
5) On the second night, I forgot my cue in the funeral scene. *sniffles*
6) Somebody has told me the drunk scene from the last night may be going on Youtube.
7) On the second night, Mr. Welch was supposed to be onstage before the first carol, 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' ended. Somebody informed me there were four carols sung.
8) The drunk scene was my absolute favorite in the entire play.

All-in-all, it was a fun play. I was only on three times, but it was fantastic regardless. =) Grandma has informed me I would be perfect for the role of Ado Annie in the play "Oklahoma!", which is our next play.

After looking up the character, I must agree. Sounds fantastic to me!

Want to put a Hispanic twist on your holiday? I'm supposed to do one of the below things for Spanish:

1) Make tamales.
2) Go Christmas caroling.
3) Reenact the Nativity for others.
4) Act out/attend a traditional play/story.
5) Break a pinata on Christmas Eve.
6) Prepare a midnight dinner on Christmas Eve.
7) Attend Midnight Mass.
8) Open your gifts at midnight on Christmas Eve. (My absolute favorite)
9) The day after Christmas, give a gift to somebody that's performed a service for me throughout the year.
10) Put 12 grapes in my mouth at each stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve, make a wish on each, and don't chew until all are in.
11) Put out shoes and leave water and straw for the three kings' camels on January 5th.
12) Fill somebody's shoes with small gifts on Jan. 5th.
13) Make King's Cake for January 6th.

... Whoever is hosting the Christmas Eve dinner this year, will you please supply the pinata? :D

Till next time,

Allison

I don't know about everyone else, but our house and lives are a bit crazy at the moment preparing for the Holidays. Very slowly presents are beginning to find their way under the tree and I will begin cooking Christmas goodies tomorrow. Christmas is definitely in the air. I love this time of year!

I would make this post a bit longer but I have a boss that is a bit of slave driver and for some reason she thinks I need to actually get my work done. Ha ha, just kidding! Lots to do before the big day!

Everyone have a very Merry Christmas and safe travels for those that are traveling!
